Purpose
To describe the web browser configuration steps necessary to manage pop-up windows in the following web browsers: IE-8 1 (Microsoft), FireFox 2 (Opensource), Safari 3 (Apple), and Chrome 2 (Google) running on either Window O/S computers or Apple Mac computers.
1 Microsoft Windows O/S only.
2 Microsoft Windows O/S, Apple Mac OS/X, and various Unix and Linux O/S based computers.
3 Microsoft Windows O/S and Apple Mac OS/X.
Introduction
The web browsers, IE-8 (Microsoft), FireFox (Opensource), Safari (Apple), and Chrome (Google), provide easy to understand pop-up window management ensuring high end user satisfaction. The web browser's pop-up window behavior can be configured.
The blocking of pop-up windows is a standard feature for these web browsers.
Microsoft Internet Explorer Pop-Up Window Management
- Start Internet Explorer
- Select the Tools menu
- The Internet Options dialog window appears.
- Select the Privacy tab
- Check the Turn on Pop-up Blocker check-box.
- To allow specific websites to open Pop-up windows select the Settings button.
- The Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog window is displayed
- Enter the address (i.e. URL) of the website to enable display of pop-up windows.
- Select the Add button to the allow pop-up windows display.
- Select the Close button to apply changes.

Firefox Web Browser Pop-Up Window Management
Microsoft Windows computers
- Start FireFox
- Select Tools menu and then select the Options item
- The Options dialog window is displayed.
- Select the Content tab.
- Select Block pop-up windows check box.
- Select the Exceptions button.
- Allow Pop-ups for websites window is displayed.
- Enter the website URL to enable pop-up display of pop-up windows.
- Select the close button to apply changes.
Apple Mac Computers Running OS/X 10.5 and above.
- Start FireFox
- FireFox --> Preferences
- The Options dialog window is displayed.
- Select the Content tab.
- Select Block pop-up windows check box.
- Select the Exceptions button.
- Allow Pop-ups for websites window is displayed.
- Enter the website URL to enable pop-up display of pop-up windows.
- Select the Allow button to apply changes.
- Select the red "x" button to close the Allow Pop-ups for websites window.
- Select the red "x" button to close the FireFox preferences window.
Google Chrome Web Browser Pop-Up Window Management
Apple Mac Computers Running OS/X 10.5 and above.
- Start Chrome (Google Chrome web-browser)
- Chrome --> Preferences
- The Chrome preferences window appears. – The Chrome preferences window is entitled: Under the Hood.
- Select the Under the Hood tab of the Chrome preferences window.
- Select the Content settings button.
- The Content Settings window is displayed.
- Select the Pop-ups menu item from the features menu.
- Select the radio button labeled: Do not allow any site to show pop-ups (recommend)
- Select the Exceptions button to allow pop-up windows from specific web-sites.
- Add the web-sites to the exceptions list to allow pop-up windows from the web-sites listed.
- Select the Done button when all web-sites have been added to the list.
- Select the red "x" button to close the Content Settings window.
- Select the red "x" button to close the Chrome preferences window entitled: Under the Hood.
Apple Safari Web Browser Pop-Up Window Management
Apple Mac Computers Running OS/X 10.5 and above.
- Start Safari
- Safari --> Preferences
- The Safari preferences window appears.
- Select the Security Tab in the preferences window.
- Select the Block pop-up windows check-box.
- Select the red "x" button to close the Safari preferences window.
Block Pop-Up Windows and Reply Options
When Block Pop-Up Windows is enabled for IE-7, IE-8, FireFox, Safari and Google Chrome web-browsers a warning / informational message and/or icon appears in the URL text entry area. To display options available to process the blocked pop-up window perform a right click mouse operation.
