Task Scheduler Problems on the Local Computer

Enterprise Console may report that affected computers differ from policy.  Chances are the Task Scheduler on the local system is having problems.  Below are a number of techniques to address problems with the Task Scheduler and troubleshoot Scheduled Tasks:

  • Does the local system show a scheduled scan in the Sophos Endpoint and Security Control software on the local system?
    • Yes -- Good.
    • No -- OK.  Let's look at the next level
  • Does the local system show a scheduled task in the Task Scheduler that matches the scan policy on the Enterprise Console?
    • No -- Then, you'd do best to reinstall the client software on the local system, or check the permissions of the installer to create a new task in the Task Scheduler
  •  Does the scheduled task in the Task Scheduler show that it's ever run successfully?
    • No -- There is a problem with the Task Scheduler; see the next item for tips
    • Yes -- The Task Scheduler seems to be working fine; I would reinstall the client software
  • Can the Task Scheduler run any task?
    • No -- Check to be sure the Task Scheduler Service is running
    • No -- Try to create a task, like launching NOTEPAD.EXE at a specified time to see if you can get it to run
    • No -- Look for a "hidden" or visible task called User_Feed_Synchronization.  If you can locate it, delete it and rerun a scheduled task to see if it will work
