Common Issues found in Langson Library 228 (Collaborative Classroom)

This is a troubleshooting guide to tackle the most common issues encountered in the Collaborative Classroom.

The First Step in Troubleshooting - Reset the room defaults:

The “default” settings for the room may have been changed for the previous class. It is important to first follow these steps to “reset” the classroom to its defaults:

Perform these steps at the Instructor PC:

  1. Log off of the account, and allow it to log back on (Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose sign out)

  2. Use the ViewSonic V Center software (shortcut is on the desktop) to turn on the TVs (if not already on) and set them to HDMI1

  3. Turn on the Projector, and use the remote to set it to HDMI1

  4. If a laptop is being used, locate the HDMI switch at the Instructor’s Podium (far left edge of the podium, under the monitor):

    1. Plug it into the HDMI cable

    2. Press the button on the HDMI switch to select “Laptop” (a blue LED will be lit next to the “Laptop” label)

Common Issues

 

No IP Addresses are displayed when using the vController software

  1. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys, and Press DEL

  2. In the menu that appears on the screen, choose “Sign Out” - this will reset the software to its defaults

The Instructor PC does not display video on the Podium monitor

  1. Move the mouse, or press keys on the keyboard to “wake up” the monitor. This may be necessary if you are the first instructor of the day

  2. Ensure that the monitor is turned on - there should be a lit LED light at the bottom-right portion of the monitor bezel/border.

  3. Ensure PC is turned on - the PC is located in the lower portion of the podium, accessible on the right-hand side

  4. Ensure the monitor is set to the correct input (HDMI), and plugged into the PC.

  5. If any or both devices will not power on, check to make sure the power cables have not been unplugged

  6. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot display video on the monitor

The Projector will not display what is on the Instructor PC (the screen is blue)

  1. On the Instructor PC, press Ctrl, Alt, and hit Delete to sign out of the account. The account will automatically log in.

  2. Use the ViewSonic V Center software (shortcut is on the desktop) to turn on the TVs (if not already on) and set them to HDMI1

  3. Power the projector off, then power it back on.

  4. Ensure projector is powered on and input is HDMI1.  Note: pressing the HDMI button on the remote will cycle through: HDMI 2 > Video > HDMI 1.

  5. Ensure Instructor Podium HDMI splitter is set to “Desktop Station” and cables are attached properly. Press the button on the middle until the blue LED is lit next to “Desktop Station”. There should be two cables plugged into the bottom of this switch.

  6. Ensure HDMI cable is not pulled out of instructor PC. The PC is located on the floor under the podium. On the back of the computer, the HDMI cable is labelled with a plastic tab, and should be plugged in here:

  7. As a last resort power cycle HDMI splitter (button on pillar):

    Press “Off”, then “On”
  8. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot display the PC video on the projector

The Projector only displays a Blue Background when using a laptop:

  1. On the Instructor PC, press Ctrl, Alt, and hit Delete to sign out of the account. The account will automatically log in.

  2. Use the ViewSonic V Center software (shortcut is on the desktop) to turn on the TVs (if not already on) and set them to HDMI1

  3. Power the projector off, then power it back on.

  4. Ensure projector is powered on and input is HDMI1.  Note: pressing the HDMI button on the remote will cycle through: HDMI 2 > Video > HDMI 1.

  5. Be sure the HDMI switch on the podium is set to “Laptop”, and that the HDMI cable is securely plugged into the laptop

    HDMI Switch - the blue LED light should be lit next to “Laptop”
    HDMI cable should be plugged into the laptop
  6. Press the HDMI button on the projector’s remote control

  7. As a last resort power cycle HDMI splitter (button on pillar):

    Press “Off”, then “On”
  8. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot get the laptop to display on the projector

The perimeter displays (TVs) do not display what is on the Instructor PC

  1. On the Instructor’s PC, logout of Windows, and allow the account to log back on (this will refresh the proper settings to control the TVs)

  2. Open Viewsonic software on instructor PC and follow instructions on pillar to power on all displays and set them to HDMI1

  3. If perimeter displays only show changing colors in the background, locate the instructor station HDMI switch (on the podium), and press the button to change the input to “Desktop Station”:

    Blue LED should be lit next to “Desktop Station”
  4. As a last resort power cycle HDMI splitter (button on pillar):

    Press “Off”, then “On”
  5. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot display the PC video on the TVs

The perimeter displays (TVs) do not display what is on my laptop

  3. Locate the Instructor Podium HDMI switch (on the podium), and press the button to change the input to “Laptop”:

  4. Securely plug in the HDMI cable to the laptop:

    HDMI cable should be plugged into the laptop
  5. As a last resort power cycle HDMI splitter (button on pillar):

    Press “Off”, then “On”
  6. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot display the laptop video on the projector

The perimeter displays (TVs) only show a background with changing colors

  1. On the Instructor’s PC, logout of Windows, and allow the account to log back on (this will refresh the proper settings to control the TVs)

  2. Open Viewsonic software on instructor PC and follow instructions on pillar to power on all displays and set them to HDMI1

  3. If displaying from the Instructor PC, locate the Instructor Podium HDMI switch (on the podium), and press the button to change the input to “Desktop Station”:

    Blue LED should be lit next to “Desktop Station”
  4. If displaying from the a laptop, locate the Instructor Podium HDMI switch (on the podium), and press the button to change the input to “Laptop”, and securely plug in the HDMI cable to the laptop:

    HDMI Switch - the blue LED light should be lit next to “Laptop”
    HDMI cable should be plugged into the laptop
  5. As a last resort power cycle HDMI splitter (button on pillar):

    Press “Off”, then “On”
  6. Contact the IT Helpdesk at x48535 or via email at libhelpdesk@exchange.uci.edu if you still cannot display the PC video on the TVs

No Sound is coming out of the Classroom Speakers

There are two speakers that are mounted on pillars (one which is directly above the podium). They both require the Projector to be on to work.

  1. Ensure the projector is powered on and input is HDMI1:

  2. Ensure that the volume on the projector is at a reasonable (audible level). The volume control is on the remote control:

  3. If playing audio on the instructor PC, be sure the sound is not muted:

    1. On the Instructor’s PC, click on the Volume Icon on the bottom portion of the screen:

       

    2. Drag the volume slider

  4. On the instructor PC, be sure that the sound is set to output to HDMI1:

    1. On the Instructor’s PC, click on the Volume Icon on the bottom portion of the screen:

    2. Click on the Speaker icon (1) on the bottom portion of the screen

    3. If HDMI TV (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) is not displayed, click on the down arrow (2) to expand the selection of playback devices

    4. Select HDMI TV(NVIDIA High Definition Audio)

  5. If you have a laptop connected to the HDMI cable, be sure the HDMI switch on the podium is set to “Laptop”:

    HDMI Switch - the blue LED light should be lit next to “Laptop”
    1. Be sure you have HDMI set as the output on your laptop (follow the steps above if on a PC.

    2. If using a Mac laptop, be sure to set its Sound output to HDMI TV (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)

  6. Finally, try to adjust the volume of the speakers using the remote control for the speakers:

    1. Look at the pillar next to the podium, where instructions have been placed, the remote should be mounted there:

       

    2. The top button will mute or un-mute the speakers
