These instructions are intended to help emergency communications personnel update the messaging on the uci.edu homepage.

Accessing uci.edu

  1. Log into Cascade using your UCInetID at https://cascade.content.uci.edu.
    1. Note that Cascade is only accessible from campus.
    2. To access Cascade remotely you must connect via VPN. Use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client; do not use WebVPN.
  2. After logging into Cascade, select uci.edu from the site dropdown at the top of the page.

Editing the homepage ribbon content

The homepage ribbon should only be used for emergency messaging when traffic to the homepage is within manageable limits. In situations where traffic to the homepage is overloading the webserver, refer to 'Activating the low bandwidth page' below.

  1. Navigate to the index page in the left-side tree menu.

  2. After the homepage loads in the Cascade preview pane, select the Edit tab.

  3. Expand the 'Settings' area.

  4. Locate the 'Settings » Header » Jumbotron' area.

  5. Select the desired ribbon color in the Ribbon dropdown.
  6. Enter the desired message in the Additional Content text-editing field.
    1. Be mindful of message length. The ribbon can only display a limited number of characters.
    2. You can adjust text size and appearance with the Styles dropdown. Headline text usually uses the h1 style, subhead text usually uses the h3 style.

  7. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.
  8. Select the Publish tab to push the changes live. Ensure the 'live' destination is checked.

Activating the low bandwidth page

Heavy traffic to the UCI homepage may overwhelm the webserver, causing page load failures. In this situation, it is necessary to activate the low bandwidth homepage to minimize load on server.

  1. Navigate to the index page in the left-side tree menu.

  2. Select the Move/Rename tab.
    1. Change the System Name from 'index' to 'index-hi'.
    2. Ensure Unpublish Content is unchecked.

  3. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.
  4. Navigate to the index-low page in the left-side tree menu.

  5. Select the Move/Rename tab.
    1. Change the System Name from 'index-low' to 'index'.
